Future Energy Llanwern is a proposed utility-scale solar farm located south-east of the Llanwern Steelworks and the village of Redwick.

Designed for a 40-year operational lifespan, the solar farm will generate approximately 380MW (megawatts) of clean energy all year around. After which it would be taken away and the land returned to agricultural use.

We are seeking your views to help shape the proposals, including how the project could reduce local impacts during construction and operation, and how it could deliver benefits to the surrounding community.

We’ve made some early updates to the Future Energy Llanwern website as we prepare to launch a public consultation on our proposals.

On 19th November 2025, our supplier engagement event was held at Coldra Court Hotel in Newport, bringing together businesses and supply chain representatives from across Newport and Monmouth. The day was a celebration of local expertise, collaboration, and the opportunities that Future Energy Llanwern could create for local businesses.

Future Energy Llanwern is proud to be progressing plans for a utility-scale solar farm of approximately 380 MW on land south of Llanwern Steelworks, near Newport. As a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP), the development will deliver enough clean energy to power 108,000 homes—equivalent to the combined household demand of Newport and Monmouthshire, or 8% of all Welsh households.
